Gum Abscess: Prevention to treatment of abscess in gums










Gums when infected can ultimately result in Gum Abscess.

Causes

  • Inadequate oral hygiene.

  • Impaired medical fitness: If an individual is medically compromised like diabetes, it can increase chances of gum infection.
  •   Hormonal imbalance: As seen in pregnancy or puberty. This can also increase chances of gum infection and pyorrhea.

Symptoms

Gum abscess can present with some or all of these symptoms:
    • Pus discharge from gums.
    • Mild to moderate pain in teeth and gums.gum abscess_swollen gums
    • In case of acute gum abscess, gums can be swollen, red, moderate to severely painful and may be associated with fever, body ache etc.
    • Bad breath.
    • Unpleasant stickiness and bitter taste sensation in mouth.
    • Other symptoms of pyorrhea may be present.
Treatment

Treatments employed in pyorrhoea are used in the treatment of gum abscess as well. Use antibiotics and pain killers may be required.
Prevention
Maintenance of oral hygiene.
